FUT has officially announced the signing of SunPayus to replace cmtry.

This move feels long overdue.

Partly because the first rumor of SunPayus joining FUT was three months ago as of writing. But also because cmtry’s performances have long been a topic of discussion, especially as to what’s holding FUT back. Now, if you asked the players about that, they wouldn’t agree, but the organization seems to have drawn a line and taken a risk.

Us personally? We’re big fans of this move (though that shouldn’t surprise anyone); it’s going to make FUT a real contender, not just a neat outsider.

We don’t think we’re being controversial when we say cmtry wasn’t a good AWPer, in part because he just wasn’t an AWPer. He was clearly a rifler who turned into an AWPer later on, and he never got comfortable with the big green in his hands. FUT still managed to get some success despite this, but he was the obvious anchor of this ship. A ship that, given the state of the scene recently, could’ve gone a great distance.

So to replace cmtry not just with an AWPer, but a really good one at that, is a huge win. Don’t just take our word for it; look at the stats:

There isn’t a single metric cmtry gets close to SunPayus on; both the duel swing gap and the round swing gap are enormous. FUT is replacing an AWPer who constantly loses the duels he’s favored to win with someone who hits all the shots he needs, and then some. Plus, they get someone who’s comfortable with the gun and more mobile. You can see that manifest in the T-side aggression stats.

Though you’ll see that mostly outside the stats.

The largest indictment of cmtry’s lack of comfort was always eye-testing his positioning. There were rounds where, instead of going forward and holding the chokepoint — you know, where AWPers get fights — cmtry would play the passive angle. You could tell this was often against the plan as well, as he would be standing in front of, or near, his teammate, who then has to play around an AWPer in his spot and is potentially forced to relocate into the T-side, taking space. Where, if cmtry had gotten forward normally, he could’ve taken the first shot, gotten the kill, backed off, and made the trade player face his teammate, who has a clean 1v1 fight with an info advantage.

With SunPayus, this problem is gone, and it gives FUT a way better CT-side.

The question, of course, is: how will SunPayus fit, chemistry-wise, and will he feel comfortable playing this style? But a man who survived Snappi CS should be able to do this too. If he does, expect FUT to start making real playoff runs, because they can consistently beat everyone but a peak Vitality and a peak Spirit. Everyone up to MOUZ should seriously be worried about this team now.

If we’re wrong, what a bummer, because this team is going to be so fun to watch if we’re right.

Let’s see how it works out in reality, though.

FUT is now:

  • Álvaro “SunPayus” García
  • Aulon “Krabeni” Fazlija
  • Yasin “xfl0ud” Koç
  • Džiugas “dziugss” Steponavičius
