Esports World Cup Group Stage: Viewer's Guide

The Esports World Cup has officially started, and while the foundations this event stands on are questionable, we also know it’s the biggest prize pool we have all year.

So, since this will undoubtedly be a big one for the scene, here's our group stage viewer's guide. It's a bit of a weird group stage for this one, but don't worry, we've got you covered. We'll discuss who's playing when, and why they're playing in that order at all.

Starting off, of course, with the format:

The format explained

The group stage format is relatively straightforward, but organized a bit weirdly.

All teams are split into four groups, and from those, four teams per group will make the playoffs. Two from the upper bracket, and two from the lower bracket. The opening games are best of 1—for some reason—with the winner going to a “semi-final” that could qualify them straight to the playoffs. The loser of the opening game will be sent to an all-BO3 lower bracket where they will have to fight whoever loses up top for the other spot.

What’s a bit odd is that two teams in the same group could never face each other. Whilst these guys are “in the same group,” every group has its own bracket.

For instance, let's use group B as an example:

Falcons play K27, and whoever wins that will face the winner of Astralis vs MIBR in the “semi,” while the losers will face each other in the lower bracket for a rematch with whoever falls down.

On the other side of the group, FaZe and BetBoom are opposite NIP and Legacy with the same arrangement. So while Falcons and FaZe are in the same group, there is no mechanism for them to actually play each other unless they get mixed up later. Though we have not seen any indication of this yet.

The play-offs will be a much more straightforward round of sixteen bracket, with a third place decider as well.

Group A

Spirit vs JiJieHao - 12:30 CEST

G2 vs M80 - 14:00 CEST

BIG vs Aurora - 11:00 CEST

Aurora’s first proper game with this lineup; BIG aren’t a pushover, so this will be an interesting test.

Group B

BetBoom vs FaZe - 17:00 CEST

Ninjas in Pyjamas vs Legacy - 15:30 CEST

A rematch from XSE PL — will FaZe be able to keep up their resurgence, or can BetBoom rediscover their old selves?

Group C

Vitality vs 100 Thieves - 20:00 CEST

PARIVISION vs B8 - 17:00 CEST

FUT vs TYLOO - 12:30 CEST

Lynn Vision vs MOUZ - 21:30 CEST

This is probably the best game of the opening round; with this being a BO1, don’t be surprised if 100T pull it off.

Group D

Natus Vincere vs 3DMAX - 18:30 CEST

magic vs The MongolZ - 14:00 CEST

9z vs paiN - 21:30 CEST

Wildcard vs FURIA - 20:00 CEST

South American clash. These games are always tight because they know each other very well. Honorable mention to magic vs The MongolZ as a gut feeling tells us that’ll be a banger.
