NA Dota loses another organisation, Shopify Rebellion call it quits
Canadian esports organisation Shopify Rebellion steps away from the Dota 2 scene after being the lone top tier competitor in North America for three years.
Shopify stepped into the Dota 2 field at the end of 2022 by signing most of the former Evil Geniuses roster. Their entry lineup featured the likes of Artour “Arteezy” Babaev, Tal “Fly” Aizik, and Andreas “Cr1t-“ Nielsen, who brought a top-three finish at DreamLeague Season 19 and a fourth-place finish at the Lima Major in the first year of the organisation’s birth in the scene.
Unfortunately, those were also the only top placements. The next year brought a few major roster changes with Arteezy taking a competitive break and Cr1t moving to Falcons. 2025 was especially harsh for Shopify, which put together an international line-up featuring players from multiple regions. Cohesion and synergy were hard to achieve, and the results have never got better. Following a bottom-four finish at the recently concluded Esports World Cup and without a ticket to The International 2025, Shopify Rebellion decided to release the entire roster and step away from the scene, at least, for now.
TLO hints at a possible return to Dota 2 for Shopify Rebellion
“Our lack of results was never from lack of trying. The dedication, the sheer grind, the heart poured into this by our players, our coaches, and every single member of our support staff was truly incredible,” said Dario "TLO" Wünsch, Shopify Rebellion co-founder. “They gave absolutely everything to this project, and I’m grateful for their relentless effort. Despite all the energy and passion put into competitive Dota we ultimately fell short of the standards we set for ourselves.”
At the same time, TLO expressed his wish to return to Dota 2, stating that this is a “see you soon rather than a goodbye” announcement, but for the foreseeable future, he will be enjoying TI 14 like everyone else, “cheering on my favourite players as a fan.”
