T1’s surprising jungle sub fails to produce a win

Hanwha Life Esports has defeated T1 2-1 in Round 3 of the LCK season, in a loss that will be scrutinized heavily due to T1's unusual last-minute decision to substitute starting jungler Mun “Oner” Hyeon-joon.

Announced just hours before the match (Aug. 8), Oner was subbed out for rookie jungler Kim "Painter" Eun-hu making his LCK debut in place of Oner. The move immediately raised eyebrows, particularly given T1’s strong position in the standings and recent form. And the resultant 2-1 will continue the questions. Here’s how it went down:

T1 bench Oner but sub Painter can’t secure a win

With T1 on a four-game win-streak, the decision to bench Oner in favor of Painter seemingly came out of nowhere. Painter was promoted from T1’s academy roster specifically for the match, putting the LCK rookie into one of the most demanding situations possible against a Hanwha Life side featuring former world champion Choi "Zeus" Woo-je and veteran jungler Seo "Kanavi" Jin-hyeok.

At first, the unorthodox swap appeared to have paid off. T1 dominated the opening game in just under 30 minutes. But the momentum disappeared in Game 2. Hanwha Life found openings around the map and punished T1’s attempts to extend its advantage. A late Elder Dragon attempt in Game 3 gave T1 one final chance, but Hanwha Life won the fight and closed out the series 2-1.

The result will inevitably put T1’s decision to rest Oner under scrutiny. The substitution itself wasn’t the only issue. In the final two games T1’s drafts and team-fighting looked terrible, but the Painter sub can’t be ignored.

T1 had been in excellent form prior to the match, racking up a win-streak within the LCK after some disappointing international results last month. HLE also looked like a potentially weaker team than the one that had triumphed at MSI just a few short weeks ago. It’s speculated this was a test ahead of a more dramatic shakeup in T1’s lineup. It’s unknown if the Painter experiment is over.

Today (Sunday, Aug. 9) brought another shake-up near the top of the LCK standings. Dplus KIA defeated KT Rolster 2-1 on Aug. 9 leaving the Legend Group tightly packed. Following the weekend’s results, Hanwha Life Esports sit at the top with T1 and Gen.G close behind, while KT and Dplus remain within striking distance.

T1 faces another challenging week, as it juggles a music single release, backstage turmoil, and now seemingly roster shakeups.
