League of Legends Classic: Will we see a throwback server for LoL soon?
Nostalgia is king in gaming, whether it’s for childhood classics, or even previous versions of the same game, so it’s no surprise that the idea of a League of Legends “Classic” has players abuzz with excitement.
But while the notion of a League of Legends classic version, in the vein of something like Old School Runescape or World of Warcraft Classic seemed farfetched just a few weeks ago, rumors of its development have been reignited by two Chinese pro players stating on stream that the version is in development.
Doinb and Uzi fuel League of Legends Classic rumors
Talking on stream late last week, Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang mentioned while conversing with Jian "Uzi" Zihao that developers were working on League of Legends Classic. While the pair didn’t seem to have too many details, they seemed to believe it was coming soon.
It’s not clear whether League of Legends Classic is being developed by Riot Games for global rollout, or something exclusive to China and Tencent. It’s also not confirmed what form any classic mode would take.
A possible direction for Classic would be to allow players to experience certain seasons, limited to Champions from that season. Some games have created similar experiences to this, with OG Fortnite and Minecraft’s snapshot feature being the most obvious examples.
OG Fortnite supplanted players into the original Chapter 1 map experiencing a nostalgia rush from one of the oldest iterations of the Battle Royale mode. In Minecraft, players can install any legacy version of the game using the launcher to roll it back to the past.
If Riot Games copied this format for League of Legends classic, players could pick and choose from what they thought ‘classic’ LoL meant.
For us, it would have to be everything pre-Season 3. The addition of jungle timers and the fact Twisted Treeline was still a part of the game means it’s our golden era.
Whatever the case, a LoL Classic could definitely bring in older players who may have abandoned the game as it developed beyond what they loved about the game.
