This is why we can’t have nice things: Riot Games to pause (remove) League Classic

League Classic will be removed at the end of the current season and hopefully return as a limited game mode.

Riot Games has announced it’s shutting down throwback League of Legends game mode League Classic, although it’s framing it as if it’s being put “back in the box for now,” as per a blog post on Oct. 15.

League Classic will be removed from the end Season 3 of 2026 and in the meantime will be operating with a limited time “windowed” queue just during peak times. In the post the developers stated that the goal of removing Classic was to have it return late, although they stressed it would likely be as a limited-time event mode.

Riot Games to remove League Classic, will become limited time mode in future

With the announcement, League Classic’s remarkable inception begins a sunsetting process. First launched on July 29 after being previewed for much of early 2026, League Classic reportedly didn’t see the player numbers required for Riot Games to justify it staying up.

Riot Games has been similarly brutal with game modes in the past (R.I.P. Twisted Treeline and Dominion), but more recently has become notorious for shuttering its games, or at least gutting the dev teams, if they don’t reach the titanic success levels of its prodigal children, League of Legends and VALORANT.

In 2024, the company drastically downsized the development team behind Legends of Runeterra, its Hearthstone-like card game. Then at the start of 2026, the company did the same to 2XKO, its tag battler, after less than a year of operation.

Now League Classic is the newest victim of what could be perceived as Riot Games’ ‘size queen’-like obsession with player count.

We loved League Classic, giving it a glowing review, despite some critique, and following its recent additions closely. In fact, the return of classic Graves to the mode made us question the entire reason we play LoL...

The developers reiterated that it would continue adding Champions to the mode, in the blog post revealing that they would be adding Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, and Lucian in patch 26.21 and Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr through later patches.

But in a year where Riot Games has aped nostalgia and throwbacks (the return of its musical acts, League Classic, a focus on legacy, etc.), the start of Worlds 2026 has heralded the end of the looking back. League Classic is dead, and we killed it by not loving it enough, or so Riot would have you believe.
