Karmine Corp has defeated Cloud9 in the opening series of Worlds 2026 in what could be a match that haunts the North American stalwarts for years to come.

Kicking off Worlds 2026 in NA with a bang, Karmine Corp came back from an absolute drubbing in game one of the series to take the best-of-five matchup. Here’s how it went down, and why it could be panic-time for C9 fans.

C9 blunder a perfect start to lose opening Worlds 2026 bout

We’ve perhaps not seen a more one-sided game in Worlds history than the opening game of Worlds 2026. Cloud9, NA’s number three seed, were making a Karmine Corp team that has struggled in the latter part of the year look like a minor region player.

But the domination wouldn’t last for long. Game 2 saw signs of life from Karmine Corp but initially it looked like the European side couldn’t handle NA’s finest. Instead, KC capitalized perfectly on their catch-comp, coupled with a surprisingly effective Vel’koz pick from Alan "Busio" Cwalina, managed to keep them in it. And after a decisive fight at Dragon, KC pushed down mid and ended the game in a turning point for the matchup.

While C9 fired back in game three, it they just couldn’t put KC away, and far from breaking the French organization’s spirit in the opening defeat, had sparked exactly the attitude that had taken them so far in International and regional competition this year.

The end result: KC 3, C9 2, with the LEC representative advancing to the next round. And now there’s the worrying part for C9: This was a series they were in great position to win. Picks, strategy, macro game. It all should have worked. And now they’re potentially not even heading to the airport - since the Play-ins are taking place at the LCS studios in LA, C9 might be Ubering back home.

In the later matchup, MVK Esports demolished FURIA in a big blow to the CBLOL team. Cloud9 will now face FURIA with their Worlds 2026 hopes on the line.
