Riot Games confirms Caps as the third inductee into the Hall of Legends

Riot Games has today (Aug. 16) announced that Rasmus “Caps” Winther will be the third inductee to the LoL Esports Hall of Legends, a hall of fame it operates for top League of Legends stars.

Unveiled by release on Sunday afternoon, the announcement detailed that new cosmetic items will be available surrounding the Hall of Legends induction from Sep. 10. The news confirms earlier leaks that emerged showcasing Caps name on a Hall of Legends plinth on Summoner’s Rift.

Caps named as third ever Hall of Legends inductee

With the induction, Caps become the first ‘western’ player to be inducted into the Hall of Legends, following Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok in 2024 and Chinese legend Jian "Uzi" Zihao in 2025.

With the announcement Chris Greeley, global head of LoL esports explained the induction:

“Caps always felt like the player you could never fully prepare for, he has that rare ‘it’ factor, the ability to rise in the biggest moments through his playmaking, leadership, and calming presence under pressure. Caps has inspired an entire generation of Western players and earned the respect of fans around the world. He’s not just one of the greatest League of Legends players of all time, he exemplifies everything we hope our esports heroes can be.”

However the announcement, as well as earlier leaks have been greeted with criticism as many felt the decision to pick Caps over earlier LoL esports forebears was a snub.

The decision has also been seen as a commercial decision, designed to sell skins, rather than one truly committed to showcasing historical greats of the esport.

Riot today also shared a series of teaser clips for a full video also set for a Sep. 10 release, the same day as the in-game items will be added to League of Legends.

In their release, Riot detailed their selection method for the Hall of Legends:

‘Every year, LoL Esports inducts a pro player into the Hall of Legends to honor their achievements within the sport and game. A list of approximately 20 players that have played for at least five cumulative years in Tier 1 competition are nominated by key Riot staff in each region and put forth to an independent, 50-person voting panel made up of esports industry veterans from every region. This panel then votes for players based on criteria including international berths, international and regional titles, role specific stats, and overall contributions to the sport.’

Rather than a physical space, the Hall of Legends exists as a website. The site will reportedly be updated on Aug. 24 to include Caps.
