Upsets no one saw coming: Tundra and Yandex first eliminated at PGL Wallachia Season 8
The group stage of PGL Wallachia Season 8 opened on Saturday, and by Day 3, the tournament had already delivered its first major shock.
Both Team Yandex and Tundra Esports found themselves fighting for survival far earlier than expected. Yandex arrived as defending champions and fresh off a second-place finish at ESL One Birmingham 2026 — one of the clear favorites to make another deep run. Tundra, meanwhile, remain one of the most consistent and dangerous teams in the current landscape.
Prior to the start, few would have predicted that Tundra Esports and Team Yandex would be among the first to fall.
NAVI eliminate the champions
Yandex entered their elimination series against Natus Vincere with a stand-in, as Dmitry “DM” Dorokhin filled in for Evgeniy "Noticed" Ignatenko due to visa issues — a factor that loomed over the series.
Game 1 looked like business as usual. Yandex leaned into a slightly unconventional approach, putting Alimzhan "Watson" Islambekov on Weaver — and it worked perfectly. He delivered a flawless performance as Yandex crushed NAVI 25–5 in just 25 minutes.
But the series quickly turned.
NAVI responded in Game 2 with a far more cohesive and tempo-driven draft. Yandex opted into the increasingly popular Lone Druid pick — one of the event’s more popular heroes so far — but failed to make it work. Instead, NAVI’s Night Stalker took over the map, with a perfect 8:0:18 performance that pushed the series to a decider.
Game 3 saw both teams abandon Lone Druid entirely. Yandex attempted a creative last-pick Kunkka to counter Invoker, but a costly mid-game fight against Brewmaster opened the door for NAVI to take control. From there, the game slipped away. Taras "gotthejuice" Linnikov’s Broodmother dominated the map, and NAVI closed out the series, eliminating the defending champions in one of the tournament’s earliest and biggest upsets.
MOUZ dismantle Tundra
The second elimination series brought a different kind of instability defined by stand-ins on both sides.
Tundra entered the match with Alik "V-Tune" Vorobey replacing Ivan "Pure" Moskalenko, while MOUZ fielded two stand-ins, continuing with Artem "Lorenof" Melnyk and Alim "aik" Bespayev as MidOne remains on break and the team searches for a long-term solution.
Game 1 was anything but close. MOUZ came out swinging, with Lorenof delivering a flawless 10:0:15 performance on Ember Spirit, followed by Miroslav "BOOM" Bičan taking over on Timbersaw. A dominant bottom lane allowed MOUZ to snowball early, and despite Tundra’s attempts to recover through farming, the game was effectively decided by the 20-minute mark.
Tundra responded in Game 2 with a much sharper and more proactive approach. Cleaner map movements and better coordination gave them control, while MOUZ struggled to inflict damage — particularly with an underwhelming Alchemist pick. Tundra capitalized and evened the series.
But Game 3 belonged to MOUZ.
Remco "Crystallis" Arets’ Medusa proved untouchable, finishing with an 11:0:7 performance in a game where Tundra simply had no answer to the pick. While the early game remained relatively even, MOUZ maintained a steady edge before fully breaking the game open around the 35-minute mark, closing out the series and sending Tundra home.
Stand-ins were always expected to play a role at this event — but few anticipated just how quickly they would reshape the bracket.
Whether it was disruption, adaptation, or simply being outplayed, two of the tournament’s biggest names are now gone before the group stage has even concluded. If this is how PGL Wallachia Season 8 begins, the rest of the event may be anything but predictable.
PGL Wallachia Season 8 Day 4 schedule
