Team Liquid secure TI 2026 playoff spot after comeback against Aurora

Team Liquid have secured their place in The International 2026 playoffs after recovering from a disastrous opening game to defeat Aurora Gaming 2-1.

The victory makes Liquid the second team to punch their ticket directly to the playoffs, following TEAM VISION earlier in the day.

Aurora, meanwhile, are not out of the tournament just yet, but will have to fight for their place through Sunday's Elimination Round.

For Liquid, however, the road through the Group Stage is complete.

Aurora run circles around Liquid in Game 1

The series might have eventually belonged to Liquid, but Game 1 certainly did not.

Liquid entered the game with Huskar in their draft, but any plans they had to make life uncomfortable for Aurora quickly disappeared. Instead, it was Aurora running circles around them. The lanes fell heavily in Aurora's favour and the game rapidly spiralled out of Liquid's control. Leaving Necrophos available proved particularly punishing, and once Aurora established their advantage, there appeared to be almost no avenue back into the game for Liquid.

TI 2026 has already delivered several sizeable comebacks, but this would have required something extraordinary. Aurora would have needed to massively overextend to give Liquid even a glimpse of an opening — which they never did.

Just 27 minutes in, Aurora put Liquid out of their misery, appropriately ending a catastrophic game for the defending TI champions with one final Reaper's Scythe.

Liquid hit the reset button

Game 2 gave Team Liquid considerably more to work with. They drafted a tremendous amount of teamfight, while Aurora opted for a more burst-oriented lineup backed by defensive tools designed to slow fights down and create space for Lina.

The beginning was hardly reassuring for Liquid as Nisha endured a particularly difficult start in his lane. But unlike the opening game, Liquid were able to keep themselves together long enough for their midlaner to recover. Nisha steadily worked his way back into the game, while Liquid's teamfight began to give them the control their draft had promised.

This time it was Liquid who dictated the important moments, eventually completing the turnaround and forcing the series to a deciding third game.

And once they had found their footing, they did not let it go — forcing the deciding third game.

Liquid book their playoff ticket

Liquid returned to Treant Protector for Tofu in Game 3 after the hero had proven crucial to their success in the previous game and took Dawnbreaker for Ace. From there, things seemed to click. Liquid continually found the fights they wanted and, more importantly, those fights kept going their way. After being completely overwhelmed in the opening game, the defending champions now looked firmly in control themselves.

Aurora could not find a way to break that momentum, and Liquid closed out a dominant final game to complete the 2-1 comeback and secure their place in the TI 2026 playoffs. Aurora, on the other hand, will now join the remaining teams in the Elimination Round, where five best-of-three series will decide the rest of the playoff field. Five teams will see their TI runs come to an end, while the five winners will join Liquid and the other directly qualified teams in the playoffs.
