Patch 7.40 brings Neutral Item changes: Helm of the Undying is dead

Patch 7.40 has landed for Dota 2, and it comes with a few Neutral Item changes – including the cycling out of Helm of the Undying.

A new patch has finally appeared for Dota 2, as 7.40 takes centre stage to close out 2025 and lead us into the new year. With tons of gameplay updates, including hero reworks, a new hero, balancing, and much more, Patch 7.40 should shift the meta significantly. While there is a lot going on, we take a closer look at the Neutral Item changes, which sees quite a few cycled out, including the long-anticipated removal of Helm of the Undying.

Neutral item ipdates: Nine out, six new, and three returning

When it comes to Neutral Items in Dota 2, we have seen many come and go. However, the items are on some sort of rotation, where they could return at a later stage. This has been seen with one of the less-liked Neutral Items in the game recently, Helm of the Undying. Returning as a Tier 5 in 7.39, players quickly grew tired of the item, especially when it could realistically be picked up by an entire team in the late game.

Players can now rejoice, as Helm of the Undying has been, once again, cycled out of the game. And we can only hope that it never shows up again.

With Patch 7.40, a total of nine Neutral Items were cycled out, including Pyrrhic Cloak and Sister’s Shroud. The full list of items is:

  • Ripper’s Lash
  • Sister’s Shroud
  • Spark of Courage
  • Brigand’s Blade
  • Gale Guard
  • Magnifying Monocle
  • Outworld Staff
  • Pyrrhic Cloak
  • Helm of the Undying

With these items being cycled out, room has been made for new additions, and a few tweaks to existing Neutral Items. A total of six new items has been confirmed, while there are more which have cycled back into the game.

The new items are:

  • Ash Legion Sheild
  • Weighted Dice
  • Flayer’s Bota
  • Idol of Scree’auk
  • Metamorphic Mandible
  • Riftshadow Prism

Alongside this comes three Neutral Items being rotated back into the game. These items are slightly different to their previous versions and often move around between the Tiers as they are cycled around. The returning items are:

  • Duelist Gloves
  • Defiant Shell
  • Rattlecage

A few of the existing Neutral Items have also been moved around. Dezun Bloodrite will be moving to a Tier 5 item, making it even stronger in the late game. While Unrelenting Eye moves down to Tier 3, with massive nerfs to fit into its new spot.

All the item changes and full patch notes can be found over on the Dota 2 website.

There is a lot to unpack with Patch 7.40, and the Neutral Item updates seem to be the smallest segment of this. However, with Helm of the Undying rotated out, at least we can have some enjoyment in the late game once again, hopefully.
