Dota 2’s newest hero brings a mandolin to a knife fight; Introducing Largo

There’s a new sound drifting through the lanes of Dota 2, and it isn’t the clash of steel or the hum of mana. It’s music. Largo, the game’s newest hero, arrives not as a conqueror or a king, but as a traveling bard whose melodies shape the land itself.

Born among the Murkrut people and raised on the living island of Velu’Mar, Largo’s story begins with a song powerful enough to create a home that saved a people. The Murkrut bard-shamans learned to commune with the island through music, their harmonies keeping Velu’Mar alive and responsive beneath their feet. For generations, the island listened. Until one day, it didn’t.

At first, they thought the fault lay with the island itself. Or perhaps with the shamans, whose voices had grown old and thin. The song that had once sustained Velu’Mar no longer stirred it. The land stopped responding and the easy abundance the Murkrut had known began to fade.

When Largo, newly anointed, descended to the island’s heart and played the ancient melody, nothing happened. There was no answer, no revitalization. It was only when he set the old tune aside and played something new, something pulled from heart and authenticity, rather than tradition, the island stirred.

That was when they understood.

Velu’Mar had never wanted a single sacred song. It wanted music. Living music with songs that are born from breath and curiosity and change. The Murkrut opened their cavern, inviting any with a song playing in their heart, but Largo knew inspiration needed to be kept fresh. So he slung his mandolin over his shoulder, gathered his ever-faithful frog troupe, and set out into the wider world, hunting for new rhythms to carry home and keep the land content.

That journey now leads him to the battlefield.

Largo wields his mandolin as both instrument and weapon, strumming melodies that empower allies and unsettle enemies. A Strength-based support, he’s built to stand his ground while setting the tempo of fights, bolstering his team’s spellcasting and turning skirmishes into carefully orchestrated performances. His sticky tongue and easy-going demeanor win over friends and foes alike, while his stomping amphibian companions keep the beat whether anyone asked them to or not.

And when the fight reaches its crescendo, Largo does what he does best: he plays the hits.

His ultimate ability, Amphibian Rhapsody, is one of the most unconventional mechanics Dota 2 has seen in years. Part rhythm game, part battlefield anthem, it asks players to strum to the beat, Guitar Hero-style, to unleash one of three songs from Murkrut tradition. Each performance brings a different blessing, ranging from increased spell amplification and movement speed to healing and slow resistance, allowing Largo to quite literally change the tone of a fight mid-battle.

Largo feels like a reminder that power in Dota doesn’t always come from raw damage or perfect execution. Sometimes it’s about timing, coordination, and knowing exactly when to change the tempo or try something new.

Largo's Abilities

Catchy Lick

Licks a chosen target, pulling them a short distance, applying a basic dispel, and dealing damage to the enemy. Upon a successful dispel, Largo gains temporary health regeneration.

Frogstomp

Throws froglets into a designated area. They stomp the ground every second, dealing damage, causing a mini-stun, and slowing enemy movement within the area.

Croak of Genius

Applies an effect on an allied hero: reduces mana cost for abilities and items, and part of the damage dealt "resonates" over 5 seconds. Each time mana is used, the effect's duration decreases by 0.5 seconds.

Amphibian Rhapsody

Switches Largo to musical mode: abilities are replaced by three songs. He is disarmed but can perform melodies in rhythm. Each successful performance grants a Groovin’ stack, increasing armor and reducing mana cost for songs. Missing the rhythm removes a stack. Effects persist for a short time after the song ends.

Dota 2 Patch 7.40 is finally here, and it has everything you hoped for and more.

The patch is Dota 2’s most impactful update of 2025. With professional play already underway at DreamLeague Season 27, the race is on for teams and players to decode the new meta; however, don’t expect to see Largo in competitive play as he has not yet been added to the Captain’s Mode.
