DreamLeague Season 29: The last chance for an EWC 2026 direct invite

DreamLeague Season 29 is right around the corner, and for some teams, it will be one last chance to reach the EWC via a direct invite.

DreamLeague Season 29 kicks off in under a week, and while the tournament may boast a $1,000,000 prize pool, there are a few teams more concerned about the ESL Pro Tour Points on offer. These points are crucial for teams wanting to gain an edge and receive a direct invite to the 2026 Esports World Cup. A total of 12 teams will receive a direct invite, depending on their EPT Point totals, with Team Spirit being the 13th due to winning last year’s event.

So far, five teams have locked in their spot at the EWC through EPT Points. While these five are assured their place, Vici Gaming is also already onboard, having won the recent China Regional Qualifier to the EWC. Alongside this, as mentioned previously, as the reigning champions, Spirit are locked in, making a total of seven teams already confirmed for the tournament. However, for others, a high placement at the upcoming DreamLeague event could be the difference between a direct invite and regional qualifiers.

ESL Pro Tour Season 2025/2026: The road to the EWC

The Esports World Cup is a major stop on the yearly Dota 2 journey, wrapping up the first half of the year and the EPT Season. This season has already seen DreamLeague (DL) Season 27 towards the end of 2025, DL Season 28, ESL One Birmingham 2026, and now, DL Season 29 on the horizon.

Each tournament saw different amounts of EPT Points spread between the teams, but now, only one remains.

While there have been multiple chances for teams to acquire these much needed EPT Points, DreamLeague Season 29 is their last chance. Although some may not need to worry, others are in dire need of a high placing finish.

Making their last stand

For teams such as Tundra Esports, Team Yandex, Xtreme Gaming, Aurora Gaming, and PARIVISION, EWC 2026 is already a guaranteed event. While Spirit were the first to be ensured a spot through their victory in 2025, the likes of Team Falcons, Team Liquid, BetBoom Team, and Virtus.pro all will need to simply survive the early tournament stages at DL Season 29.

However, when it comes to teams such as GamerLegion, Natus Vincere, Nigma Galaxy, and PlayTime (ex-South American Rejects), there is a lot more work to be done. There is also a chance for REKONIX, and the now ex-HEROIC to make a stand – but that is going to be a long shot. But, the door is now more open than ever after Vici Gaming acquired their spot at the EWC 2026 through the China Regional Qualifier just last week.

Natus Vincere

Having shown faint glimmers of brilliance through the year, NAVI is one team that is going to be desperate to break into the playoffs at DL Season 29. At 860 EPT Points, the team is on the cusp of a direct invite, but there are many challengers chomping at their heels. With a very poor performance at PGL Wallachia Season 8, the team will be hoping to avoid an early exit, which could see them heading into qualifiers for EWC 2026.

Nigma Galaxy

Nigma have barely scraped by in 2026, qualifying to DL Season 29 and ESL One Birmingham through second-place finishes in DreamLeague Division 2. With only 560 EPT Points currently, the famed organisation will have their work cut out for them next week as they hope to finally make up some lost ground. The team has already begun to show signs of life in the 1win Essence I event, but everything gets a whole lot harder next week.

PlayTime

Having gone through the ringer, PlayTime, once paiN Gaming and ex-South American Rejects, have survived a very rough year. With multiple point deductions, PT comes into DL Season 29 with 522 EPT points. Having shown recent signs of dominance, especially in DreamLeague Division 2 Season 4, this could be a team to look out for. But, with that said, they will need a mighty push through the fantastic teams on show to break into the top 13.

GamerLegion

Although GL are sitting in the final direct invite slot currently, it is not a comfortable position. With the above three teams breathing down their neck, the last bastion of North American Dota 2 could see their hopes slip away. Their ninth/tenth place finish at ESL One Birmingham 2026 has been just enough to hold them firm, but any lower in the upcoming event will see them stumble.

While it is unlikely that we will see too much in the way of changes, Dota 2 is always unpredictable. This could be the tournament where REKONIX rise up and make a stand, or where the South American teams find their footing. With OG and MOUZ not participating at the event, the question remains whether their respective points will be enough to keep them in the running for the direct invites.

There is a lot to play for when DreamLeague Season 29 kicks off on May 13th, 2026.
