LGD eliminated from TI 2026 as China's final banner falls

LGD Gaming's run at The International 2026 has come to an end after a dramatic 1-2 loss to Team Yandex in the final Elimination Round series.

By the time LGD entered the server, China's representatives were already gone. Vici Gaming and Team Resilience had both been eliminated earlier in the day, leaving the legendary Chinese organization, albeit represented by its South American roster, as the last remaining connection to the home region.

For a while, it looked like LGD might carry that banner into the playoffs but instead, one final deciding game brought their run to an end.

LGD come out swinging in Game 1

There was always an element of unpredictability surrounding LGD's drafts. With Topson and his seemingly endless supply of unconventional picks and pocket strategies, including the mid Riki already brought out earlier in the tournament, preparing for them is rarely straightforward. But there was nothing gimmicky about the way LGD played Game 1.

Yandex secured first-pick Earth Spirit, one of the standout heroes of the tournament, and things remained relatively competitive early. Then LGD found two pickoffs that transitioned into a complete team wipe and the game broke open. LGD began playing beautifully as a unit, finding another team wipe shortly afterward as their advantage turned into a landslide.

In just 30 minutes, LGD had completely stomped a Yandex team that entered TI among the stronger contenders. It was a statement opening game, and suddenly LGD were just one win away from the playoffs.

Game 2 brought out some of the more interesting ideas

Yandex secured Undying and handed Saksa Bounty Hunter, one of his stronger heroes but still an unconventional choice with elimination on the line. Watson, meanwhile, took on the Io carry that has continued to gain attention throughout the event. On the other side, LGD had drafted greedy lanes and initially got away with it.

LGD emerged from the early game in a position that could have set them up well for later, with their draft also providing several ways to deal with Doom —but Saksa had other plans. His Bounty Hunter went courier hunting and began creating additional advantages for Yandex, while the rest of their lineup steadily came online around him. Undying proved as powerful as expected, and Watson delivered an excellent performance on Io as Yandex took over the game and forced the series to a deciding third map.

LGD let the decider slip away in Game 3

LGD turned to Necrophos for Game 3, while Yandex returned to the Bounty Hunter for Saksa and added Snapfire to give themselves some dangerous combinations. For much of the early game, LGD were getting the better end of the exchanges. They built the lead, found better trades and appeared to be putting themselves in position to close out the series.

Then it all came crashing down.

LGD surrendered their advantage and the game swung dramatically, but even then, nothing was settled. Around 58 minutes into the decider, the game remained on a knife's edge, where either team could still take it. Then LGD saw Lina out of position and tried to capitalize... but it proved disastrous. Instead of finding the pickoff they needed, the engagement swung heavily in Yandex's favour. Shortly afterward, a huge Vacuum helped seal LGD's fate.

When the game ended about ten minutes later Yandex was holding a staggering 80,000 gold lead and, more importantly, the final playoff spot.

A dark day for Chinese Dota

LGD's elimination puts an end to an unusual TI chapter for one of Dota's most recognizable organizations.

Xtreme Gaming had already bowed out the day before, while Vici Gaming and Team Resilience saw their runs end earlier on in the day. LGD were the last remaining organization carrying the Chinese banner, but they too fell at the final hurdle.

Four organizations with ties to Chinese Dota entered the tournament. Three were eliminated on the final day of the Group Stage. When the playoffs begin, none will be on the main stage in China.

The action at The International 2026 will now take a short break before returning Thursday, August 20th for the double-elimination playoffs. The battle for the Aegis will continue through Sunday.
