Win Condition Episode #6: GLYPH’s formation and Arthur’s insights

For our sixth iteration of the Dota 2 Win Condition, we welcomed our first guest, GLYPH coach, Leon Lee “Arthur” Wei Yip. Southeast Asia’s Dota 2 scene has always been one of our favourites to watch. With many teams on the cusp of breaking into Tier 1 tournaments, competition can often be fierce. Just recently, a new challenger appeared, as GLYPH formed and instantly made headlines during qualifiers for BLAST Slam VII. This week on Win Condition, we had a chance to sit down with Leon Lee “Arthur” Wei Yip, the new team’s coach.

We found out all about the team’s formation, their ethos, and how they are shaping up as they head towards their first Tier 1 Dota 2 event in a few weeks.

Win Condition: GLYPH take Southeast Asia by storm

Opening up this week, we welcomed our first ever Dota 2 guest onto Win Condition, with GLYPH’s coach, Arthur, joining us. He gave us a short story on how this new stack came together, the experience of the players and what the team itself means in terms of the Southeast Asia scene. Arthur highlighted the lack of leadership in the region and how the team can point the rest in the right direction.

GLYPH seem to be the perfect “dream team” of the SEA region, and the coach speaks a lot on the discipline of the team, as well as the players drive to perform well. Arthur speaks passionately on these topics, and this can be seen as a great coach’s stance. With the team forming so quickly, they managed to shock the BLAST Slam VII SEA qualifiers with the chemistry of the team.

Qualifiers and beyond

We had to ask Arthur about their qualifier run, and how it went beyond the team’s chemistry. We asked him if there have been any moments at which it felt that the team were done for and everything would fall apart, and his answer was surprising.

Right off the bat when we were playing KukuysV3, we were down in Game 1. We got beaten up so bad, and then in Game 2, I just thought that this would be how we debut."

Beyond their initial scare, GLYPH reacted well to the pressure and made it out the qualifier as the winner. However, even with BLAST Slam VII locked in, the team were unfortunate to not make it through to DreamLeague Season 29. This, though, does give them time to prepare, and come into BLAST as true underdogs, ready to surprise their opponents.

Coaching for Arthur

One thing is clear throughout the entire Win Condition episode, and that is Arthur’s love for coaching and his belief in the team. Consistently touching on the topics of team culture and mentality, as well as finding the right approach to fit the players. GLYPH could become a force in SEA to be reckoned with in the near future, and he links his open communication mannerisms back to Jonathan "Loda" Berg and his time with Alliance.

Buy and Sell

Of course, we had to throw Arthur into the mix with Buy and Sell, where we had more interesting opinions which needed to be given. This week we had takes on GLYPH themselves, Tundra’s stints without their carry, the North American Dota 2 scene, and much more.

Wrapping up, we touched on the future, with tournaments still lined up before we head into the qualifier period for Esports World Cup and The International. All-in-all, it was a fantastic learning experience and insightful look into Arthur, his coaching styles, and how GLYPH stand to grow in the coming months.
