TI 2026 Team Liquid: The Unicorn
Among the racehorses, war horses and dark horses, there are a few coming straight from the realm of legends, creatures of myth that defy explanation.
Team Liquid are the unicorn of TI 2026
The unicorn is rare, elusive, and magical. For an organisation as old as esports, and one that has already lifted the Aegis of Champions twice in their history, the unicorn is a perfect symbol. Their Dota 2 team has reinvented itself time and time again, always emerging stronger. Their first TI title was claimed nearly 10 years ago. The second one was won by the core of the current lineup in 2024.
Team Liquid’s roster is a mix of old and new. A foundation built on some of the longest-standing core in the scene. Even after captain Aydin "Insania" Sarkohi retired in the aftermath of TI 2025, two of Liquid’s players remain one of the most resilient duos in the Dota 2 scene. Michael "miCKe" Vu and Samuel "Boxi" Svahn have been playing together since the HoN era.
Funny enough, when Liquid were winning TI7 in 2017, miCKe, Boxi, and Insania were winning HoN Tour World Finals. A year later, they transitioned to Dota 2 as a group. After Insania retired, it made perfect sense for another duo with years of experience playing together and three Major titles won back-to-back to join the team.
Ace and tOfu had shared the lane for the past five years, from Hellbear Smashers to Tickles, Gaimin Gladiators and now Liquid. However, upon their arrival at Liquid at the beginning of the current competitive season, they had to adapt to new laning partners to fit in the line-up. tOfu made the swap from soft to hard support and took on the captain role left vacant after Insania’s retirement.

Given how big the changes were for Liquid after last year’s TI, it took them a minute to find their footing in the season, and the road to Shanghai was anything but smooth. From finishing 10th at BLAST Slam IV, to winning BLAST Slam VI a few months later, only to be eliminated in the middle of the pack at Esports World Cup and bounce back hard at the very last tournament before TI15, and claim the 1win Essence II title, it’s safe to say that inconsistency defines Liquid’s season heading into the pinnacle event of the year.
But if there's one thing Liquid have proven time and again, it's their ability to learn from defeats and adapt when it matters most. When the 7.41 patch reshaped the meta, Liquid's biggest changes were in the sidelanes. While both miCKe and Ace worked on their hero pools, Nisha remained the solid rock in the midlane, the tempo controller, without tinkering too much with his heroes.
Ace has finally freed himself from the one-man aura concept and is now playing faster with key aggressive items on heroes such as Pangolier, Axe or Centaur Warrunner. But don’t be fooled; over the years, he mastered that aura strategy timing and Underlord remains his most played hero. The aggressiveness also comes from the supports for Liquid.
Nobody really remembers when Witch Doctor was first-pick material in competitive play. Perhaps when PPD and Puppey were the absolute best supports in the field?
Anyway, tOfu has turned Witch Doctor into a cornerstone of Liquid’s drafts. Of the 44 Witch Doctor games he has played across his entire professional career, 12 have come in this patch alone, more than a quarter of all his WD games. Techies has become the most-played heroes by Boxi, after Hoodwink. It's a statistic that speaks to Liquid’s willingness to embrace the meta and make it their own. But adapting to a patch is one thing. Adapting to The International meta is another.
Liquid's journey through 2026 has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but in Shanghai, all of that history fades into the background. At TI 2026, Team Liquid have one more chance to prove that the unicorn's magic is as real as ever.
