Rune Eaters stun Virtus.pro while Team Liquid eliminates Xtreme Gaming at EWC 2026

The road to the Esports World Cup playoffs narrowed considerably on Tuesday as the Survival Stage got underway, which opened exactly as advertised, with two three-game series, nearly six hours of Dota between them, and the tournament's first major playoff upset.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, twelve teams entered the single-elimination bracket knowing that one loss would end their tournament. The opening two series certainly reflected those stakes, both going the full three games and featuring marathon contests that pushed players to their limits.
Rune Eaters deliver the upset
The day's biggest surprise so far came courtesy of Rune Eaters.
Facing Virtus.pro, the underdogs recovered from dropping the opening game to complete a 2-1 comeback and eliminate one of the tournament's more established names.
Game 1 started even, but Rune Eaters lost momentum. Once the pace slowed, Virtus.pro wrestled back control and converted the advantage into the opening victory.
A gruelling 64-minute second game saw Rune Eaters claw their way back after falling behind early, eventually forcing a deciding map. That confidence carried straight into Game 3, where Rune Eaters looked transformed, dominating Virtus.pro from start to finish and allowing virtually no room for a response.
The upset keeps Rune Eaters alive and books them a meeting with Aurora Gaming tomorrow, Wednesday, July 15th.
Liquid survive when the stakes are high
Team Liquid's series against Xtreme Gaming featured two extraordinary late-game battles lasting 69 and 93 minutes respectively, with neither side willing to concede an inch.
The opener appeared to be slipping away from Xtreme before they rediscovered their footing. Outstanding support play, particularly from the Earthshaker and Dark Seer duo, completely shifted the momentum and allowed the Chinese squad to claim the first game after nearly 70 minutes.
Game 2 somehow went even longer. For more than 90 minutes, the teams traded objectives, teamfights, and momentum in a contest where it often felt as though neither side could find the decisive breakthrough despite inventories overflowing with late-game items. Liquid eventually emerged victorious, forcing one final match.
Compared to what came before, Game 3 felt almost brief.
Liquid regained control early and never allowed Xtreme to recreate the late-game chaos of the previous two maps, comfortably closing out the series in 43 minutes.
It was another reminder that when the pressure rises, the roster often seems to find another level.
With the victory, Liquid advance to face defending champions Team Spirit in tomorrow's second round of the Survival Stage.
