BLAST shakes up Dota 2 Slam events with major format changes: Qualifiers, live audience, and extended structure

BLAST Slam IV, the first LAN with a live audience in the Dota 2 Slam series, will mark the beginning of a new era.

BLAST Slam IV Singapore, the first LAN with a live audience in the Dota 2 Slam series, will mark the beginning of a new era for what was so far the only tournament to be played on a fast paced format.

Starting with the Singapore LAN event, the Slam series transitions away from its “king of the hill” tournament format to a two-week-long Dota 2 marathon, combining online and offline stages. Additionally, the invite-only system will also be replaced with regional qualifiers and a special “region hero” invite.

From speedrun to marathon: BLAST Slam’s new format

BLAST’s initial fast-paced, studio-only format was unique in the current Dota 2 landscape, but gave no chance to fans to attend these events. The 2024-2025 competitive season was filled to the brim with studio-only tournaments, which led to oversaturation in the community.

This season alone, besides BLAST, which ran three editions of Slam events already, there were also three DreamLeague seasons and three PGL Wallachia events, with the fourth about to start this month, all played in a studio or online format only.

The shift to a more traditional structure indicates BLAST’s wish to come closer to the community and give the Dota 2 teams more chances to engage with their fans around the world.

From BLAST Slam IV onwards, the schedule will be as follows

Week 1: Online stage

12 of the world’s best teams, representing each region.

  • Group Stage (played Tuesday to Saturday) outcomes:
  • Top 2 Teams: Advance directly to the Semi-Finals at the LAN event.

  • 9th to 12th Place Teams: Enter the Last Chance Playoff. Only two of these teams will earn the final spots in the LAN Play-In.

Sunday Matches:

  • 2 x Bo3 Last Chance Playoffs: Determine which two of the bottom four teams secure a place in the LAN Play-In.
  • 4 x Bo3 LAN Play-In Matches: The 3rd to 8th place teams, plus the two winners from the Last Chance Playoff, face off to decide who progresses to the Quarter Finals.
