Astra Invicta and LEGION sent packing at PARI Universe

The first day of playoff eliminations at PARI Universe saw Team Liquid and Team Spirit survive their lower-bracket encounters, sending Astra Invicta and LEGION home with convincing 2-0 sweeps. While both series ended with clean scorelines, the games themselves were anything but quick, as the ongoing struggle to break high ground once again stretched seemingly decisive victories well beyond their natural conclusions.
Team Liquid outlast Astra Invicta
Team Liquid opened their elimination series against KuroKy's Astra Invicta with a commanding advantage, but converting that lead into a victory proved considerably more difficult. Despite controlling much of the game, Liquid struggled to break through Astra Invicta's high-ground defenses, a familiar problem in the current patch that ultimately dragged the opening game out to a staggering 74 minutes.
The second game saw a more active showing from Nightfall and lorenof, who were considerably more involved than in their previous outing. Their efforts, however, were not enough to turn the series around. Liquid remained firmly in control, with miCKe delivering a flawless performance on Kez to help secure the 2-0 sweep.
There was at least one lighter highlight amid the lengthy battles. Malr1ne had a tiny kitten keeping him company on camera for much of the series, giving viewers an unexpected dose of Meowlr1ne between the action.
Team Spirit's coordination proves too much for LEGION
Fresh off their TI championship, Team Spirit continued their impressive run with a 2-0 victory over LEGION, although the series offered another example of how difficult closing out games has become.
LEGION struggled to find a foothold in the opening game, lacking both a meaningful midgame presence and the defensive tools needed to withstand Spirit's advances. Their chances were further complicated by Spirit securing Mars, a hero boasting a win rate approaching 80% at the event.
LEGION returned with a stronger draft in game two and initially looked considerably more competitive. However, a mistake around the 22-minute mark gave Spirit the opening they needed to seize control.
It was a familiar demonstration of the synergy that has become one of Spirit's greatest strengths. The reigning TI champions have an extraordinary ability to recognize even the smallest opening and respond collectively, with all five players coordinating almost instantaneously to capitalize on an opponent's misstep.
Yet even that level of coordination could not overcome the difficulties of closing out the game. Despite building an astonishing 57,000-gold advantage, Spirit needed more than an hour to finally bring the match to an end.
With Astra Invicta and LEGION eliminated, Team Liquid and Team Spirit advance further through the lower bracket as the battle for the $250,000 prize pool continues.
